Having gone more than a month since playing a ranked opponent, Michigan once again showed that it saves its best performances for when the spotlight is brightest. Taking on a 12-2 Indiana squad on Sunday, the Wolverines stormed out of the gate in the first half, claiming a 74-63 victory.

Moving past the slow December of playing only weekend games, the Wolverines reopened conference play on Thursday evening with a sluggish offensive start. Hosting Penn State, Michigan put on an 11-2 run just after the break, holding on for a 68-55 victory.

Wrapping up their last game of the non-conference, the Wolverines showed some signs of rust from the spaced out December schedule on Sunday, struggling to put away Binghamton. Michigan led for all but two minutes against the 4-9 Bearcats, but carried only a three point advantage with 11 minutes left in the second half. That’s when U-M made its move.

The Wolverines’ slow-paced December schedule of weekend only game continued on Saturday, and the rust of time off showed. At least initially. Finding almost only three-point opportunities early against Air Force, Michigan made just one of its first nine shots. As has been the case all season though, U-M was able to rely on its defense.

Facing off against an in-state opponent with eyes on pulling off a big upset, the Wolverines didn’t exactly have their best game. In fact, Michigan only took its first lead as time expired in the first half. That moment was the middle of a big run that spanned either side of the break, which ultimately turned the game in U-M’s favor, leading to a 70-62 victory.
