Wheatley Jr. leaves program, roster notes
Written by Matt Pargoff

Tyrone Wheatley Jr. is no longer a part of the Michigan football program. The Wolverines released their fall roster on Thursday evening with the redshirt junior absent from the listing.

Struggling with injuries during his career, Wheatley was sidelined through most of his freshman season, breaking his leg more recently this spring. While Sean McKeon and Zach Gentry are expected to be the top two tight ends this fall, Wheatley could have fit into the mix as blocker in the group, competing with Nick Eubanks to be third on the field in the group.

Wheatley signed with Michigan at the same time as his father joined Harbaugh’s staff as the team’s running back coach. Wheatley Sr. spent only two years back in Ann Arbor, reuniting with Doug Marrone as a member of Jacksonville Jaguar’s staff last fall.

Player Positions

It’s not uncommon for high school prospects who could play numerous spots at the next level to be listed as “athletes,” but it’s a bit strange to still see that as a player’s spot once they’re in college. That’s where Michael Barrett is listed in the Wolverines’ official release of the fall roster though.

Barrett played quarterback in high school, but at 6-foot-0, 224 pounds, could end up at running back.

Phillip Paea switched to the offensive line during the spring, and seemed to think it was a permanent move this summer, but is listed as a defensive lineman on the roster.

Ryan Hayes is officially listed as a tight end, but at 6-foot-7, 271 pounds, he is one to watch for a move to offensive line. Given that he is wearing No. 60, the plan might already be for him to start out there.

Newcomer Numbers

The Wolverines have several graduate transfers joining the team this fall, with former Illinois quarterback Jeff George Jr. wearing No. 3, former Utah defensive back Casey Hughes wearing No. 35, and former Minnesota and Central Michigan running back Berkley Edwards wearing No. 32. If George is in the mix as a holder, he would likely switch jerseys as Quinn Nordin also wears No. 3.

Among the true freshmen, quarterback Joe Milton is wearing No. 5, Michael Barrett is No. 6, defensive back Myles Sims is also No. 6, wide receiver Ronnie Bell is No. 8, defensive back Gemon Green is No. 9, German Green is No. 13, defensive back Sammy Faustin is No. 17, fullback Ben VanSumeren is No. 20, running back Hassan Haskins is No. 25, running back Christian Turner is No. 28, defensive back Vincent Gray is No. 31, linebacker Cameron McGrone is No. 44, tight end Ryan Hayes is No. 60, offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield is No. 73, tight end Mustapha Muhammad is No. 85, tight end Luke Schoonmaker is No. 89, defensive lineman Taylor Upshaw is No. 91, defensive lineman Julius Welschof is No. 96, and defensive lineman Aiden Hutchinson is No. 97.

Also of note on player numbers, Josh Uche has switched from No. 35 to No. 6, which will likely force Sims to change numbers.
