As head coach Brady Hoke said in Monday’s press conference, the Wolverines’ 45-0 victory over Illinois was a great team win in which the Maize and Blue “played well as a team” and “played together”.  A lot of different players made contributions on offense, defense and special teams but some stood out a little more than others, including a sophomore linebacker who played a significant role in holding Illinois scoreless.

Defensive developments and fun with stats

In Brady Hoke’s first season as the Michigan head coach, the Wolverines struggled defensively during the early portion of the non-conference slate. While holding Western Michigan to just 10 points and scoring two defensive touchdowns sounded great, the Broncos piled up 17 first downs and nearly 300 yards in less than three full quarters of play before the game was called due to weather.

Football is a contact sport and injuries are going to happen.  In 2011 Michigan was fortunate to keep their injuries at a minimum and make it through their schedule with just three significant injuries that impacted the two-deep for multiple games.  From the start of the 2012 season, though, it seemed as if Michigan’s luck was running out.
