A native of North Las Vegas, Nev., where he attended Legacy High School, Hughes is listed on the official Utah website at 5-11, 195 pounds.

Redshirting in 2014, he saw limited action his next two years, playing mostly on special teams, but took a more prominent role on the defense last fall. In 2017, he played in 11 games, making 35 tackles, including 25 unassisted stops, broke up one pass, forced two fumbles and made 2.5 tackles for a loss.

As a graduate transfer, Hughes will have one year of eligibility remaining, and will be available to play immediately in the 2017 season.
