Wolverines push past Maryland, hold on in wild finish

Coming off a big win at Michigan State just two days earlier, there was certainly some risk of a hangover effect for the Wolverines against Maryland on Monday evening. That certainly appeared to be the case in the first half, but the Maize and Blue ultimately stormed back to take command, requiring last second heroics to claim a 68-67 victory.

Struggling to make shots out of the gate, even those in close, Michigan fell behind by as many as 14 point. After scoring the final four points of the first half though, the Wolverines continued that run by scoring the first 10 of the second.

The game of runs continued to go back and forth, with Maryland pulling ahead again before Michigan began rattling off three pointers to go up by as many as 10 points. The Wolverines struggled from the foul line though late, giving Maryland the opportunity to regain the lead on a three point shot from Kevin Huerter with 3.5 seconds remaining.

With a final chance at victory, Isaiah Livers heaved the ball from his own baseline past midcourt, where Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman pulled it in and headed to the basket where he drew a foul. While Michigan struggles from the line late let the Terrapins back in the game, it was the senior guard’s clutch delivery at the end that reestablished the Wolverines’ advantage and gave them the win.

Abdur-Rahkman scored only seven points in the game, having a rough outing heading into the final minutes, but made a key three pointer late and scored his 1000th career point on the two made free throws.

The Wolverines were led by Moritz Wagner, who scored 18 points and pulled in 11 rebounds, while freshman Jordan Poole helped spark a big second half run while scoring 11 points.

Improving to 16-4 on the season and 5-2 in Big Ten play, Michigan will get a break until Thursday, when they will travel to face Nebraska at 9 p.m. eastern time on Big Ten Network.
