Wolverines flip in-state Iowa commit

The Wolverines entered the picture late for Essexville (Mich.) Garber’s Ben Vansumeren, but when the opportunity to stay in state presented itself, the 6-3, 225-pound athlete switched his pledge, turning down Iowa after a month as a Hawkeye pledge.

Vansumeren does not have a clear position at the college level, but could fit in a number of roles. He has the size to play linebacker, but is best known for his offensive skills, pulling in 85 receptions for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. Given his size, if he were to play on the offensive side of the ball, it would most likely be as a fullback or tight end.

Regarded as a three-star prospect, Vansumeren was offered by the Wolverines this last weekend while he made an official visit in Ann Arbor.

He is the 17th commitment to the 2018 recruiting class.
