Teske steps up as U-M pushes past Southern Miss

Michigan stormed out of the gate fast on Thursday evening, but would take a lot more than the initial surge to get past Southern Mississippi. Despite building up a 14 point advantage early, the Wolverines trailed at halftime, needing a huge run in the second half to secure a 61-47 victory.

Outscoring the Golden Eagles 20-1 over a stretch of nine minutes was key to the victory, but head coach John Beilein left the game more impressed with the defensive effort than the showing on the other side of the court.

“Our offense was awful today,” he noted. “I think a lot of that has to do with that we hadn’t played a game of man offense since maybe our scrimmage a little bit, where we really played well with our offense.

“It was just stagnant, not good, and the ball was sticking all over the place. We’ve got to trust it more and we’ll be much better at it. Allowing 14 points after halftime is a stellar defensive job and we’re excited we could do that.”

One of the big surprises of the game for Michigan was the emergence of Jon Teske, who set a previous scoring high of four points against Central Michigan just a few days earlier. Against Southern Miss, he came off the bench to log his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, including five rebounds on the offensive end.

“He was really pursuing rebounds,” Beilein said of Teske. “He was a guy that would box out and keep boxing out and take himself out of the play. We had a ‘hit and go get’ attitude with him.”

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman led Michigan in scoring with 14 points, while Duncan Robinson and Moritz Wagner each added 12.

Having played three games in a five-day stretch, the Wolverines won’t get too much rest before the schedule becomes even more hectic. Michigan travels to Hawaii next for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, taking on LSU on Monday at 11:30 p.m. eastern time with television coverage provided by ESPNU.

The Wolverines will play Notre Dame or Chaminade on Tuesday with another matchup to be determined on Wednesday.
