Michigan jumps three spots in AP, up one in Coaches Poll

A pair of interceptions returned for touchdowns and several missed opportunities in the second half helped keep the score differential in check in Michigan’s 33-17 victory against Florida, but pollsters recognized the overall dominance the Wolverines’ defense, moving the team up in the latest rankings.

The biggest leap took place in the Associated Press Poll, where the Maize and Blue climbed three spots to No. 8, passing Wisconsin, Florida State and Oklahoma State.

In the Coaches Poll, the Wolverines moved up one place, likewise landing at No. 8, while passing only FSU.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State stayed at No. 2, while Penn State climbed two spots to No. 4, and Wisconsin dropped one spot to No. 11, according to the coaches. The AP similarly moved the Nittany Lions up two places to No. 4, but did not punish the Badgers for a close first half against Utah State, leaving Wisconsin at No. 9.

Maryland’s win over Texas got the Terrapins close to the top-25, coming at No. 28 according to the coaches and No. 30 in the AP. Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan State also earned votes between the two polls.
