With the football season just around the corner, the USA Today released its preseason coaches’ poll on Thursday, with the Wolverines starting the season out at the No. 8 position. This marks the first time since 2008 that the Wolverines have been recognized in the preseason poll, and the first time since 2007 they have begun the season in the top 10.
Four Michigan opponents also appear on the coaches' poll, with the Wolverines opening the season against No. 2 Alabama in the Cowboy Classic in Arlington, Tex. Three weeks later, Michigan will conclude its non-conference schedule with a game at Notre Dame, which starts its season ranked No. 24.
Big Ten opponents Michigan State and Nebraska come in at No. 13 and No. 16 respectively.
While not on Michigan’s schedule this fall, the Wolverines hope to face off against fellow Big Ten member Wisconsin to finish the season. The Badgers start out at No. 12 in the coaches’ poll.
